Some Interesting Facts About Different Types of Whales

There are so many of different Whales such as Humback Whales, Blue Whales, Beluga Whales, Fin Whales, Orca Whales, Gray Whales, and Sperm Whales. These creatures are mammals. Whales are endothermic (Commonly known as warm-blooded). Their body temprature is almost the same as ours, but they often live in cold water.



Humpback Whales- These creatures are mostly known for their magical singing. They sing in order to communicate with others and to attract mates quit potential mates is quite complex and can do this for hours on end. Theses incredables creatures can weigh up to 40 tons and can even grow up to 48 to 60 feet. WOW!!!! These creatures migrate and breed annually as well for feeding. They are omnivores in their dietary habits, such as feeding on fish, plankton, and tiny shrimp-like krill. They are very powerful swimmers. Their tails fin called a fluke even leap out of water.



Blue Whales-This Whale is the largest as well as the loudest living animal on earth. Adult female blue whales are larger than adult males in size. They can grow up to 105 feet long and weighs up to 200 tons. Thats pretty big!! Despite their gigantic size, they are shy and placid. Each summer is spent in polar waters and migrates towards the Equator during the winters. Their diet is mainlycomposes of nearly 4 tons of krill, tiny shrimp like animals, in 1 day. Thats more than what i can eat a year!! They emit a series of sounds to communicate with eachother up to 1,000 miles away. They look like a true blue under water, but on the surface their coloring is more mottled and blue-grey.



Beluga Whales-They are also called as white whatles; though they are born grey or brown, they turn white upon reaching sexual maturity. Their color makes them easily distinguishable among other whales. These whales are found in the Artic Ocean's coastal waters andin subartic waters. Their migration depends on environmental conditions. They range from 13 to 20 feet in length and weigh around 2200 pounds. WOW that might be a little to big for me to have for a pet!! These animals are social, living and hunting together in small groups. They mostly hunt schooling fish, which are found in abundance in the coastal area. They have 2 unuasual characteristics; first they never chew their food, they just swallow whole; and second they have flexible necks, taht enables them to turn its head in all directions



Fin Whales-Its the second largest species of whales, commonly known as the, ''greyhound of the sea'', because of its speed. They are found all over the world, migration in the summer to breed. They even travel in small pods, even solitary at times. They are known to dive, as deep as 800 feet, when hunting for squids or fishes. They grow to be nearly 90 feet long and can weigh up to 70 tons. Phew thank goodness I don't have to lift that whale!! Unlike other whales, they may not need any food the whole winter, as they rely on their accumulated blubber for energy.



Orca Whales-One of the most powerful preditors, also commonly known as ''Killer Whales''. They can be anywhere between 82 to 105 feet and can weigh up to 200 tons. WOW!! Their average lifespan in the wild is 80-90 years. Most of the times, they hunt together in pods of 40. They oftern frequent coatal waters, but can also be found in reigions close to the Equator. They prey on marine mammals as well as fish. They can even grab seals and polar bears right off the ice, using their four inches long teeth. They use a variety of sounds to communicate and each pod is known to have its own typical sound. They have distinctive black-and-white coloring.



Gray Whales-They are often referred as great migrates, they can swim 12,430 miles round-trip from the Alaskan waters to the Mexican coast. They are the most primitive of all whales, mottles gray and covered with abundant abrasions, scars and clusters of parasitic barnacles on their heads and backs. They are 40 to 50 feet in length and can weigh up to 40 tons. Nothing to say to that this time!! They are imnivore in nature and generally feed on amphipod ctrustaceans. They are fiercely protective of their Young ones. Scammon's Lagoon, off Baja California, is famous for spotting the gray whale.



Sperm Whales-These whales were named after a milky white waxy substance, believed to be sperm, found in its own head. It has the largest brain, found in any animal in the world. They can grow up to 59 feet and weigh around 35 to 45 tons. It feeds on several species, but has a taste for the giant squid, its mortal enemy.
